WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A TRADITIONAL AND RETRACTABLE SCREEN?
Unlike traditional fixed screens, retractable screens remain out of sight until you need them. They retract into a discreet housing when not in use – preserving your views as well as your home’s décor.
WILL I BE ABLE TO SEE THROUGH THE SCREENS?
The great thing about retractable screens is that they disappear when you don’t need them – meaning you can enjoy your view all year round. The screen’s mesh allows you to see through the screen, but still keeps the bugs out. There are various mesh types available with different screen densities and colors, so if you want screens for solar shading or privacy, you have that too.
ARE THEY GOING TO LOOK UGLY ON MY HOUSE?
Not at all. Phantom screens are designed to be discreet and match with your home’s décor. You can order them in a wide variety of colors and finishes – including wood grain. You can even have them matched to your specific color. And there are a variety of installation options, allowing you to keep the architectural integrity of your home.
WHAT KIND OF BUGS DO THEY STOP?
That depends on what mesh type you choose – but the holes in the mesh are very small and protect against most bugs. For superior insect protection, you need to choose a mesh like Phifer No-See-Um which protects against tiny insects. If you have specific needs, you should discuss it with your local Authorized Phantom representative, who will be able to advise you which mesh is right for you.
WHAT ARE THE SCREENS MADE OF?
There are several types of retractable screens available – for windows, doors, and large openings. They all consist of the same four components – aluminum housings, slidebar and track and PVC coated fiberglass or polyester mesh – which makes them all extremely durable. CAN I CHOOSE WHAT TYPE OF MESH I HAVE?
Yes, you can. Depending on the screen you choose, there are over 30 types of mesh available in different colors and weaves. Just ask your Authorized Representative for more information and mesh samples. You’ll be able to see the mesh types available and discuss your needs with them. You can choose from all kinds of mesh for a wide variety of uses from protection from the heat and glare of the sun, to mesh that’s suitable for homes with pets, or even full privacy mesh.
CAN I USE THESE SCREENS ON MY EXISTING DOORS / WINDOWS? OR DO THEY HAVE TO BE ON NEW CONSTRUCTION?

DO RETRACTABLE SCREENS COMPLY WITH THE RELEVANT BUILDING CODES?
Yes, they do. However, if there is a particular issue you have, or would like to get a specific answer to a building code question, then please call your local Authorized representative (1-888-PHANTOM) and we’ll be able to give you all the information you need.
DO RETRACTABLE SCREENS LET THE RAIN / WIND THROUGH?
That depends on the mesh type. Mesh types with more open weaves allow greater air flow, tighter weave mesh less so. If the wind is very strong then the mesh may produce a “sailing” effect or escape its tracks. This can be easily rectified when the wind has dropped. For peace of mind, it is always wise to retract the screens in very strong winds. The mesh doesn’t act as a waterproof screen and therefore rain will penetrate the mesh.
HOW CAN I USE RETRACTABLE SCREENS TO EXPAND MY LIVING SPACE?
We’re seeing many new homes that have a continuous space and open sight lines extending from the kitchen to dining area to living area – and ultimately into outside areas, patios, and decks. And many of these are incorporating retractable screens to provide insect-free ventilation without interrupting the flow of the home. Retractable screens are perfect for creating outdoor rooms and extending the time you can enjoy your covered porches, patios, and lanais.
HOW I CAN REDUCE MY ENERGY BILLS WITH RETRACTABLE SCREENS?
Retractable screens can help reduce air conditioning costs and lower the amount of energy used to cool the home. This is particularly true of exterior mounted retractable screens, which are seven times as effective at keeping the interior cool as blinds or curtains on the inside, reducing solar heat gain by up to 80%. Retractable screens are used only when needed so your daylight can be maximized. This delivers significant payoffs in energy efficiency because the amount of artificial lighting and air conditioning is reduced.
CAN I REDUCE THE GLARE OF THE SUN WITH RETRACTABLE SCREENS?
If you need to reduce the glare of the sun to enjoy your space, you can do that too by using a mesh type designed for solar shading. The type of mesh used in a retractable screen, typically solar mesh and dark colored, can reduce glare by absorbing the direct light from the sun.
CAN I ADD SCREENS TO MY HOME AUTOMATION SYSTEM?
Yes, you can. Our Executive screens are powered by industry leading Somfy motors which can be connected to full home automation systems, as well as wind and/or sun sensors. ARE RETRACTABLE SCREENS ECO-FRIENDLY?
The housings are made from extruded aluminum – which is endlessly recyclable and is the most abundant metallic element on earth. Retractable screens can also help reduce air conditioning costs and lower the amount of energy used to cool the home. This is particularly true of exterior mounted retractable screens, which are seven times more effective at keeping the interior cool compared to blinds or curtains on the inside, reducing solar heat gain by up to 80%. The mesh can be replaced if damaged which gives our retractable screens a longevity which is unmatched by other companies. Phantom screens can last for many years and be recycled at the end of their lives.
WE HAVE REALLY SEVERE WINTERS HERE – WILL MY SCREENS STILL WORK?
Yes, they will. Phantom screens are installed and used all over the world – from the heat of an Australian summer to the exceptionally cold winters of Canada and are durable enough to endure the harshest of winters. You will need to retract the mesh into the housing before winter. We would recommend cleaning the screens once or twice a season to eliminate any small dust particles in the mesh: in spring before starting to use the screens after winter season is over, and in autumn, when summer is over. You can clean our retractable screens with mild detergent and water, and gently wipe them off.
CAN I USE RETRACTABLE SCREENS ON MY HERITAGE HOME? AND ARE THERE ANY RESTRICTIONS?
Yes, you can. Phantom’s retractable screens are designed to be incorporated into any home design or décor choice. They are customizable with a wide variety of color choices, wood grain finishes and, depending on the product you choose can be recessed so they are completely hidden from view until needed.
WILL RETRACTABLE SCREENS ADD VALUE TO MY HOME?
We can’t promise a dollar value, but the feedback we get is that people love our retractable screens and wouldn’t be without them. They are certainly highlighted as a feature in many real estate listings – which means people view them as an attractive addition to their home and something that will help make the home easier to sell.
WHAT’S INCLUDED IN MY WARRANTY?
There is a limited lifetime warranty on all parts excluding the mesh and a two-year warranty on labor
HOW LONG DO YOUR SCREENS LAST?
Our screens are very durable and will last you many seasons with proper routinely maintenance. We also recommend getting a Tune-up every 3-4 years to get your screens looking brand new. Contact our office to schedule a Tune-up.
WILL THEY FIT MY DOORS / WINDOWS?
You can get retractable screens for nearly every kind of opening.
For doors, there are retractable screens suitable for single in-swing and out-swing doors, double-French, sliding patio and oversized doors. You can choose retractable screens for all types of windows too – single or double hung, casement, awning, sliding or tilt & turn.
And retractable screens can also be used on large openings such as patios, lanais, porches, and verandas.

ARE THEY ONLY AVAILABLE IN WHITE? CAN I HAVE OTHER COLORS?
There are eight Signature colors: Classic White, Slivered Almond, Sandalwood, Driftwood Beige, Rideau Brown, Hartford Green, Coastal Grey and Phantom Black.
In addition, Phantom retractable screens are available in virtually any custom color including a variety of Decoral® decorative wood grain finishes. Phantom Screens has also developed a comprehensive color match program to blend our screen solutions with any color scheme. All we need is a sample color swatch to create a screen solution in the selected tone to meet your vision.
WHAT ABOUT MY PETS? WON’T THEY BREAK THE SCREEN?
Sometimes, when the screens are first installed, pets can get confused and bump into them. There is enough “give” in the mesh to help prevent the screen from getting damaged. However, our retractable screens are intended for insect or solar protection only and should not be utilized as a pet retention system.
WHAT HAPPENS IF SOMEONE WALKS INTO MY SCREEN BY ACCIDENT?
Accidents happen! If it’s a gentle bump, chances are your screen will be perfectly OK. There is enough “give” in the mesh to prevent damage. However, if someone does fall into the screen heavily the mesh may pull away from the housing. If this happens, call your local Authorized Phantom representative who will be able to replace the mesh, and service the screen to ensure it runs smoothly again.
CAN I ENCLOSE MY PORCH WITH SCREENS?
Yes, you can – in fact they work very well! Executive motorized retractable screens are perfect for this type of application – whether you’ve built your porch already or are planning a new one. They can make it really easy to expand your living space and help to merge indoor and outdoor spaces.
CAN I USE THEM ON DOUBLE DOORS? SLIDING DOORS? CASEMENT WINDOWS? FOLDING GLASS WALLS?
Yes, yes, yes and yes! You can use retractable screens on almost any door, window, or large opening. We’ve included all the SIZE information you need on each of our product pages, so explore the website to find out which product best suits your requirements.
ARE RETRACTABLE SCREENS HURRICANE PROOF?
No, they’re not. They are designed to be retracted into their weatherproof housings when bad weather hits.
I LIVE IN AN HOA / STRATA DEVELOPMENT – DO I NEED TO GET PERMISSION TO INSTALL?
That depends on your HOA or strata rules. It also depends on how the screens are being fitted (internal or external mounting). If you’re not sure, it is always best to check with the rules for your particular development.
WHAT IS THE LARGEST SPAN I CAN COVER WITH A PHANTOM SCREEN?
That depends on the type of screen. For example, Executive motorized screens have a maximum width of 25 feet and Infinity screens are modular, and as their name implies, an infinite number can be used to screen very wide spaces. The maximum sizes of each type of screen – including doors and windows – are listed on the product pages of this website.
CAN I TAKE THE SCREENS WITH ME WHEN I MOVE HOMES?
The screens are designed to blend in with your décor and become part of your home. The Limited Lifetime Warranty covers the screens to the original purchaser for the lifetime of the home, so removing them would negate your warranty.
WILL IT MAKE A MESS? DO I HAVE TO INSTALL IT MYSELF?
Our door and window screens, as well as our screens for large openings are professionally installed by Phantom-trained installers who will treat your home with care.
AREN’T THEY REALLY EXPENSIVE?
Not really! When you consider that the costs include full professional installation, and all our products are made and assembled by hand. When you compare our products to other companies, you’ll find that our quality stands out. When you buy a retractable screen from Phantom, you’re buying a screen which features the latest technology, is hand made with meticulous attention to detail and will last for many years.
HOW LONG DO THEY TAKE TO INSTALL?
Of course, it depends on how many doors and window screens you order, but most installations are completed within one day. However, you schedule your installation with your us, we will also have to take into account any manufacturing lead times when ordering your screens. There are a number of installation options for our Executive motorized screens including fully recessed and surface mounted and so the time taken for installation will vary for every project.
Once scheduled, we can provide you with a more accurate time frame for your installation.
HOW WIDE OF AN OPENING CAN YOU ACCOMMODATE WITH A RETRACABLE SCREEN DOOR?
A: We stock screens for standard size doors (up to 7ft H x 3ft W/6ft W for double) and oversize doors (up to 8ft H x 4ft W/8ft W for double). Other door sizes up to 12ft wide are available through special order.
WHAT DOOR TYPES CAN I USE RETRACTABLE SCREENS ON?
For doors, there are retractable screens suitable for single in-swing and out-swing doors, double-French, sliding patio and oversized doors.
I’VE GOT PATIO SLIDING DOORS – CAN I USE RETRACTABLE SCREENS?
Yes. You can use several types of retractable screens, depending on the size of your opening. For standard sized patio doors, take a look at our Legacy door screens. For large openings, check out our Distinction or Infinity manual retractable screens or Executive motorized screens.
DO SCREEN DOORS REQUIRE A TRACK AT THE BOTTOM?
Yes, they do; but they are subtle and can be integrated with a sill/threshold adapter to help prevent tripping hazards. There are different types of sill adaptors to suit different door installations – you can find out more by looking at the individual product pages on our website.
HOW DO I KEEP MY DOOR WORKING GREAT?
As the screens are retracted when not in use, they stay in their housings during wet and cold months. The amount of maintenance is therefore very minimal. We recommend cleaning the screens once or twice a season to eliminate any small dust particles in the mesh. You can clean our retractable screens with mild detergent and water, and gently wipe them off. We also recommend scheduling a tune-up every 3-4 years to keep your screen in great shape.
WHAT DOES A TUNE-UP INCLUDE?
It includes the replacement of the screen mesh, handles, tracks, and any other materials that are old, dented or faded. A re-adjustment of tension and a complete cleaning and lubrication of the door. Contact our office to schedule a Tune-up.
WHAT SIZES ARE AVAILABLE FOR WINDOW SCREENS?
Retractable window screens are available in widths from 13.5” to 84”, with a maximum length of 90”.
DO THE WINDOW SCREENS MOUNT ON THE INSIDE OR OUTSIDE OF THE WINDOW?
Mounting location depends on the type of window. Either way, the low-profile housing and color options help blend the screen into the window frame.
HOW DO THE SCREENS STAY DOWN?
Our retractable window screens feature a built-in latching system to hold the screen in place.
DO RETRACTABLE SCREENS PROTECT FROM THE OUTSIDE DAMAGE, LIKE GOLF BALLS?
If you need protection from objects like golf balls, we recommend Tuff Screens. They are made with extra durable mesh and fitted on the outside of your window. These screens are not retractable.
WHAT WINDOW TYPES CAN I USE RETRACTABLE SCREENS ON?
You can choose retractable screens for all types of windows too – single or double hung, casement, awning, sliding or tilt & turn.
CAN I USE THEM ON A TRIANGULAR WINDOW?
No, you can’t. Unfortunately, all our retractable screen profiles require the verticals to have a perpendicular drop and therefore are unsuited to triangular windows.
HOW WIDE OF AN OPENING CAN YOU ACCOMMODATE WITH MOTORIZED SCREENS?
Motorized screens can be as wide as 25ft. Motorized vinyl panels can be as wide as 18ft.
I HAVE A DECK THAT I WOULD LIKE ENCLOSED AND SCREENED. DO YOU OFFER THIS SERVICE?
We do not offer any construction services, but we will work with your builder or contractor to properly design and plan for screens. Being involved in a project early on allows us to recess tracks and housings to make the screens even less visible, giving your space a clean and finished look.
I AM INTERESTED IN SCREENING-IN MY PATIO BUT I’M NOT SURE IF I WANT PERMANENT OR POWER, WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND?
Our retractable power screens are great if you want to keep your space open and have the option of a screen. Our permanent screens are a good option if you have a custom shaped opening or if you just want your space enclosed full time. We can also do a combination of both power screens and permanent screening to accommodate peaks or fireplaces and other décor.

CAN I USE ONE ON MY GARAGE DOOR TO USE THE SPACE WITH THE DOOR OPEN?
Yes, you can. Many customers choose our Executive motorized retractable screen for this type of application, although our manual retractable screens for large openings, Distinction, or Infinity, work equally well. It’s really up to you and your budget!
WHAT ABOUT ARCHWAYS?
Yes, you can. The best applications for archways are when the screens are recessed above the arches and conceal the screens entirely until needed.
MY MAIN ISSUE IS WITH BUGS. DO YOUR POWER SCREENS SEAL TO KEEP THEM OUT?
Our Power Screens are designed to keep out insects and are sealed in along the tracks on each side with brush along the bottom which creates a seal along the floor. We offer a variety of meshes which all protect against insects.
Our only exception would be our Cable-Guided Power Screen system which is primarily used for solar protection and operates more like a shade that runs on cables, leaving some small openings on either side.
MY MAIN ISSUE IS WITH DIRECT SUN. WHAT SOLUTIONS DO YOU HAVE FOR SUNBLOCK?
No problem! We have a variety of levels of sunblock mesh, ranging from 45% to a 90% block. Accommodating for any situation.
MY MAIN ISSUE IS WITH WIND AND RAIN. WHAT SOLUTIONS DO YOU HAVE TO KEEP THE ELEMENTS OUT?
We have several options that will help keep rain, snow, and cold air out and warm air in. Our Vinyl panels or our 90% sunblock mesh are both great ways to extend the useful life of your outdoor areas. Give us a call us for more details.
